The backstory
Dicey Situations was founded by Craig Boyd back in March, 2020. Dicey, a live event service, had some slight delays at the outset, but was able to start operating properly a few months later.
Craig’s idea was to give gamers new ways, or rather, new places to enjoy tabletop games, try new games, and make it easier for them to introduce their friends to the hobby.
Initially, Dicey primarily hosted board game nights and supported gaming conventions. Since then, Dicey’s focus has shifted to operating its own events and expanded from just board games to cover many areas of gaming and nerd culture.
The Mission
The dirty secret about gamers is that we’re never just gamers. We’re gamers and we’re craft beer drinkers, foodies, music lovers… sports fans. We have families, jobs, budgets, errands to run… chores to do. Frankly, we might not even play that many games nor play very complex games when we do.
With this in mind, Dicey’s mission is to help us fit the gaming we love in around all the other stuff we have going on. That’s why Dicey tries to make all of our events affordable, accessible, and packed with high-quality entertainment to maximize your gaming and leisure time.
Dicey also works hard to partner with local businesses, like breweries and game publishers, so the gaming community can support our local economy and vice versa.
About Craig
Craig Boyd is the founder of Dicey Situations and Dicey’s lead event planner. He’s also a bit of a nerd.
The early concepts for Dicey began rattling around in Craig’s brain when he was an undergrad at Penn State. As a member of the Gaming Association of Penn State, Craig spent many a Friday and Saturday night playing hours of Axis & Allies. He often wished he could mix his love of gaming with his penchant for live music and buffalo wing specials. But, this was many years ago and board gaming in bars had yet to happen. While at Penn State, Craig also delved into event management with the Urban Gaming Club, directing live action games like Humans Vs. Zombies.
After graduating from PSU, Craig entered the professional world as a market researcher before shifting into higher education administration, where event management once again took a front seat in his life. Ideas for some kind of board game event service continued to zoom around his head in many iterations, from a traditional board gaming bar to a touring outfit. Ultimately, Craig refined his concepts into the present day Dicey Situations and rolled the dice in early 2020.
Outside of tabletop gaming, Craig is a huge fan of Celtic music, the Philadelphia Phillies, dogs, and green shoes.
